Notes: This is a portrait of Georg Briel, done from a photograph. He was a Captain in the Afrika Korps, and that's about all I know of him. This was drawn around the time I was reading and re-reading Donna Barr's The Desert Peach, and was feeling rather inspired by it. I was also quite fascinated by the human aspect of war, imagining the lives the soldiers had outside of their service (particularly the draftees), and the ways in which combat had permanently altered their psychology.
