Politically InQueerect Old Ghosts cover art

PiQue Pieces: Old Ghosts cover art

PiQue Pieces: Old Ghosts cover art published on Purchase

The full cover painting for the Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts and Other Stories comic book.

This piece was inspired by common tropes in gothic romance novel cover art: the spooky house, the full moon, a single light on in one window, the sinister figure lurking in the background, and the alarmed protagonist attempting to flee.

Yeah, yeah. It’s what it looks like: Todd going shirtless to pander to thirsty comic book nerds who like hairy dudes. To be fair, Todd gets shirtless for several pages in Old Ghosts, so it’s not false advertising.

The version of this drawing that’s reprinted in the book is the one with the strategically-placed comic, so here, have the unaltered artwork.

PiQue Pieces: Punk Archer AU sketch

PiQue Pieces: Punk Archer AU sketch published on Purchase

This drawing is the result of a comment thread on Tapastic, speculating on what Archer might have been like if he’d gotten heavily into punk.

(I ended up removing all my comics from Tapastic after they changed their Terms of Service in a way that was unacceptable to me.)

Todd and Archer make a cameo appearance in the first page of Blake’s chapter from Transposes.

The final printed version of this page is in grayscale. This is what the page looks like in full color (shaded with a mix of cool gray Prismacolor marker and ink wash).

This was originally published in Rocksalt, an indie comics newspaper in Austin, Texas. Reprinted in Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts and Other Stories.

The shading here is a mix of Prismacolor marker and ink wash (the sunbeam is a digital add-on). The printed version was true grayscale, but the color incarnation looks pretty neat as-is.

A full color, full-sized comics page takes me around 15-20 hours to create, just in case you were curious.

Credit where it’s due: former NBA star Tim Hardaway took the backlash to heart, worked to educate himself on LGBTQ issues, and went on to become a major supporter of queer rights.

PiQue Pieces: Bow Tie

PiQue Pieces: Bow Tie published on Purchase

This was originally published in the 2008 Prism Comics Guide (later reprinted in Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts and Other Stories). Line art was hand-drawn, and digitally shaded for the anthology. My intention had been to go back and hand color the comic, but I have never gotten around to doing so. Instead, I keep using it as practice for digital shading/coloring.

This is actually a two page comic, compressed into one long strip for online reading. So the price for buying the original assumes two pages of black & white line art.
