Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run page 46 is up, and it brings you yet more delightful culinary adventures:

What exciting facts shall we learn in next week’s installment, I wonder? Hum hum!

Speaking of future pages, I’ve got chapter 5 thumbnailed, and am currently working on thumbs for chapter 6. I decided to go ahead and rough out Ch6 before drawing ch5 because I need it to percolate for a bit. See if it hangs together the way it’s supposed to.

Once those thumbnails are done, I’ll circle back and draw Ch5. And THEN. Once THAT’S done, I’ll put together a PDF of the first 5 chapters, for they comprise Part One. Ch6 will kick off Part Two.

I’ve been debating how to package the story for consumption in other media besides online. I don’t want to make people buy the same thing in multiple formats, so I think what I’m going to do is stick with the ch1-2 minicomic for displaying at shows; digital editions of each Part, which will be pay-what-you-can; and then a single offset print volume for the whole book once it’s done. Which will be a couple of years yet.

ANYHOW. That’s my current thinking. I’m hoping to have the digital edition of Part One available sometime in February. If I were REALLY with it, I’d have it in time for the comic’s first birthday on Jan 14. But I’m not, so I won’t. Shrug!

But yes, keep an eyeball out for VoSS 1 in the new year.

Cheers,

Dylan

In this flashback, Razi does battle with the most terrifying monster of all: INTRACTABLE BUREAUCRACY. Witness the horror here:

About that Patreon link: as you may know, Patrons who pledge one dollar or more per month get early access to pages (typically Monday morning instead of Wednesday), as well as additional world-building information.

I’ve made a public post for this week’s page to show you what sorts of things I typically talk about in the world-building section. Also, when the series goes on break in between chapters, I typically give Patrons a peek at additional finished artwork, concept sketches, and so forth. All that for a mere $1 a month – that’s $12 for a whole entire year.

Obviously you can pledge more, and higher levels get you stuff like postcards in the mail, original comic pages, and suchlike. Check out the various reward tiers to see what strikes your fancy.

Now, last call for the ALPHABET Kickstarter!

ALPHABET queer comics anthology

As of Wednesday morning, December 23, exactly 24 hours remain on the campaign. You’ll be glad to know we’re funded and going to press, but this is your last shot at scooping some of those fancy backer rewards! Check it out, and pledge if you haven’t already.

Cheers,

Dylan

What excitements are in store with the latest page of VoSS? Find out on:

Can you believe I actually deliberated over whether or not to have the bug leg sticking out of Hali’s mouth in that last panel? Good thing I came to my senses.

Have YOU come to your senses and backed the ALPHABET Kickstarter yet?

There’s a little over a week to go, and still a chunk (but a doable chunk) of money to be raised. Northwest Press is hosting a free preview of the book, if you need to read a bit before making a decision. Check it out!

Did I show you the sneak peek of my illustration for the coloring book? If not, observe:

So! Get on there and snag a copy, yeah?

VoSS page 43 is up, and it asks the important question: do you prefer orange meat or yellow meat? As you ponder your answer, read the new page here:

Difficult to choose, isn’t it?

Less difficult choices #1: if you’re in Denver, come to the Denver Drink & Draw comics reading at Mutiny Information Cafe this Saturday, Dec. 12. There’ll be several of us doing live readings of our comics, and there will, of course, be books for sale as well. Excite!

Less difficult choices #2: backing the ALPHABET Kickstarter!

There’s about two weeks left on the campaign, and a new backer award in the form of a QUILTBAG tote bag. That’s right, I said a QUILTBAG TOTE BAG. Clearly a queer necessity.

Plus, wonder of wonders, you can tote your ALPHABET anthology book and your queer coloring book in your QUILTBAG tote bag. Amaze.

Cheers,

Dylan

First up, new page of Valley of the Silk Sky! In which we learn that Hali is prone to overexplaining things out of nervousness. Read it:

Hali’s dialogue includes a string of Daraz script. If you want to nerd out about the Daraz writing system, might I recommend this blog post over on the Vally of the Silk Sky website.

If you DON’T want to nerd out about it, well, fine. Whatever. Be that way.

Nerd out about this instead:

queer comics sale Northwest Press

Northwest Press is having a 40% off sale through December 7, which means you can get a big ol’ pile of queer comics for cheap! That includes my books Transposes and Politically InQueerect, and of course QU33R, the Ignatz Award-winning anthology I’m in.

And if you already have all those? Well, good on ya, first of all. But there’s a ton of other new and awesome things to grab, and now is a great time to do it. Might I recommend the complete Ethan Green collection?

ALPHABET queer comics anthology

Finally, don’t forget to back the ALPHABET Kickstarter, and help bring even more queer comics into the world. I have a new piece in this book, as does Eric Orner (author of the aforementioned Ethan Green), as well as a ton of other great creators: Melanie Gillman, Ed Luce, Dax Tran-Caffee, Ajuan Mance, Robert Kirby, Jennifer Camper, and more.

One of the things I really like about this book is how it showcases both established creators and new faces. Guaranteed you’ll find a new artist in here whose work you’ll enjoy. There’s a good mix of trans and asexual creators as well, and several bisexual/pansexual folks, and several people of color. So really, a wide range of representation, and a very worthy collection of comics.

Cheers,

Dylan

Finally we get some merriment and chuckles in VoSS. Observe:

[No body parts were dissolved in the making of this comic.]

Also, this is Trans Awareness Week (Nov. 14-20, 2015), so JUUUUUST in case you missed it, you can read my new comic on transgender representation in media over at Fusion:

I would really like to push this comic out to all the various transgender resource organizations out there, so if you know of one, it would be a huge help to me if you could share this comic with them.

Thank you!

Page 39 of Valley of the Silk Sky features PERKY ENTHUSIASM and BLOOD. Read all about it here:

For new folks who may have wandered in after reading my Fusion comic on trans representation in media, Valley of the Silk Sky is my queer YA science fiction webcomic that features an all-nonbinary cast and a few trans characters. I post the individual VoSS pages here on Studio NDR (my ancient, creaky website devoted to my art), but I built a whole other website to host All Things Valley of the Silk Sky.

So you’d want to head over there if you’re a nerd for world-building, or want to read up on the cast, or find out more about other VoSS stories in other publications.

As far as where to read the pages, as I said you can read them here on Studio NDR, but this site build is, as I said, old and not very mobile-friendly. If you prefer to read on a tablet or phone, both the Voss tumblr website and the Tapastic page are mobile-friendly. Tapastic is specifically designed for webcomic publishing, so it has several nifty features for your reading pleasure, like place-holding and new page alerts.

Politically InQueerect cameo in Transposes

Speaking of Tapastic, I started adding some Politically InQueerect cameos to the PiQue archive there. The most recent post is from Transposes, where Archer, Todd, and Dee show up as faces in a crowd. See the page in question here, and read the “more” stuff at the bottom for further trivia.

Finally, to any new readers, you can buy Transposes and Politically InQueerect comics from my publisher, Northwest Press. And you can read a 16-page standalone Valley of the Silk Sky story in the Beyond Anthology. Neat!

Anyway, see you next Wednesday for the latest VoSS installment!

Cheers,

Dylan

So anyway, that announcement. (If you’re wondering what happened to this week’s Valley of the Silk Sky page, I posted it yesterday, so see previous post for deets.)

I made this comic for Fusion about trans representation in media, and it is now live and awaiting your eyeballs!

Also, random surprise convention added this weekend, November 7-8: Rocky Mountain Con. I’m sharing a table with a friend, so I guess look for me in the artist alley with all my queer comics!
