Valley of the Silk Sky

Care for some overgrown ruins? Worry not, Valley of the Silk Sky page 89 has you covered (in weird plants):

That Patreon post has a little more info about said weird plants, so click through if you desire more knowledge (Patreon posts of VotSS pages are locked Monday-Wednesday, and become available to the general public on Thursday).

But also, TCAF is nigh!

If you’re going to be at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend (May 12-13, 2018), you should come find me at table 218 for the convention debut of the Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run Part Two print book!

I’ll also be on the Adventure Teens panel on Sunday at 2:00 PM, wherein we’ll talk about why we let our characters run around without adult supervision.

I’m excited for to return to Toronto, even if it means I have to get up ridiculously early for my flight tomorrow. See you there!

Cheers,

Dylan

Chapter 9 proceeds apace, as page 87 emerges from the fog. It may be observed here:

In convention news, I’m on a panel at TCAF, but they haven’t officially announced the schedule yet, so I’ll reveal more about that soon.

WisCon panels HAVE been officially announced, so now I can tell you when and where I’ll be (besides the vendor’s room, of course):

What: Alternatives To Patreon: Direct Support To Creators
When: Sat, 8:30–9:45 AM
Where: Capitol B

What: Fantasy Worldbuilding In Comics
When: Sat, 10:00–11:15 AM
Where: Capitol B

What: Found Media in Mixed Objects (readings by various trans folk)
When: Sat, 2:30–3:45 PM
Where: Michelangelos

What: Beyond S/He
When: Sun, 10:00–11:15 AM
Where: Capitol A

Exciting, is it not? (Actually, yes indeed, it is.)

Also, this is a propos of absolutely nothing, but I got tickets to see Janelle Monáe, and I’m unreasonably excited about it (unless that level of excitement is to be expected, which probably it is, so I’m actually very reasonably excited).

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky LGBTQIA YA webcomic

Yes indeed, page 84 marks the EXCITING CONCLUSION to chapter 8, so check it out:

If you want to read the whole chapter through from the beginning you can do so either here on Studio NDR or here on Tumblr.

Chapter 9 is, of course, already finished. My plan is to start running it in early-to-mid April. I have some minor art corrections I want to do to previous pages before it kicks off.

In the meanwhile, I will indulge in the world-building appendix posts I usually sandwich in between chapters. These posts will just be on the Tumblr site, not here, JSYK.

Also, $1+ subscribers to my Patreon will get to peep some concept art during the break, so if you want in on that, gimme one whole dollar.

Spirit in Action Conference

I’ve just arranged to have a table at the Spirit in Action Conference, a community event for trans folks and their friends and allies, which is being hosted by the Mile Hi Church on Saturday, March 24. The conference is free, so if you’re in the Denver area you should come!

On Friday, March 23 the Mile High Church is hosting Janet Mock, which event is NOT free, but you should come to that, too.

Cheers,

Dylan

As is often the case, the Patreon post has some additional nuggets of world-building info, should you yearn for such a snack.

WhimsyCon This Weekend

In convention news, I am to be found this weekend at WhimsyCon here in Denver.

I’ll be in the vendor’s room most of the time, tabling with Out in Colorado. So if you’re looking to buy some books, this is a fine time to do it.

I’ll also be on several panels:

Fri, 9:00 PM-9:50 PM, Author Readings (Mesa Verde C – Maker)
Sat, 4:00 PM-4:50 PM, Fantasy Map Creation (Main Events)
Sat, 5:00 PM-5:50 PM, Gender Representation in Fandom (Wind River B – Costuming)
Sun, 9:00 AM-9:50 AM, QUILTBAG Characters and Stories (Mesa Verde B – Victorian)

To see panel descriptions, you can go to the schedule listing by participant and scroll down to “Dylan Edwards” to find my stuff.

I believe this is the first year for this show, so if you’re in the Denver area, come on down and give it a big ol’ welcome!

Valley of the Silk Sky page 80, and a Library event this weekend published on

Valley of the Silk Sky queer YA sci-fi webcomic

Valley of the Silk Sky page 80 is here to let you know everything’s fine, nothing’s wrong, why would you even ask, oh, but while I’m thinking about it …

In other VotSS news, I’m so close (so close!) to finishing up colors on chapter 9. Just 2.5 more pages to go and it’ll be in the can. Hoping to wrap that up this weekend.

If I don’t quite manage that goal, it’s possibly because I’m gonna be hanging out at the Denver Public Library this weekend for the grand opening of their Teen Space at the Central Library. You can learn more about the event here.

It’s on Sunday from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. I’ll have display copies of my various books available for perusal (though this is not a selling event, so it’s just for lookin’ this time around). I’ll also have some of my usual giveaways like bookmarks and whatnot, so come check it out.

I’ve also been confirmed for Whimsy Con, taking place here in Denver March 2-4. I’m on three panels (listed on my Appearances page), and will otherwise be hanging out selling books at the Out in Colorado booth in the Dealer’s Room.

So! Come check out all those things, why doncha.

Cheers,

Dylan

Speaking of Patreon, a couple of things:

I now have page updates set to early access, which means $1+ Patrons get exclusive access to them on Monday. On Thursday, the post goes public. (Note: This doesn’t apply to all the posts I make on Patreon, just finished comic pages. Things like work-in-progress posts will stay behind the paywall.)

That particular post has some additional details about eating habits in the Valley, so check it out if you’re curious.

Even if you don’t pledge, you can still follow creators and see their public posts. So if it’s convenient for you, feel free to follow me on there and get updates that way. The “follow” button is on the left under the total pledge widget.

As for convention news: I got into TCAF! I will have my own table this time around, up on the second floor. I’m very excited to return to Toronto and one of the best indie comics shows in all the land.

I’m working on lining up a couple of local events for February and March, and will post when I have more info.

As ever, you can keep track of all my convention appearances on the Appearances page.

Until next week,

Dylan

The Nib Banned Books Dylan Edwards Alison Bechdel Fun Home

I have a new comic up on The Nib, as part of their Banned Books feature. Be sure to check out all six comics, with a bunch of different artists discussing their fave banned books!

As you can see, I elected to talk about Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home. When I was working on Transposes, I studied FH closely for tips on how to put together a compelling non-fiction narrative.

Before that, Dykes to Watch Out For was a big influence on my own early attempts at an ensemble cast comic, namely Politically InQueerect. While PiQue eventually went more in a traditional comic format direction, you can see in the early strips where I basically just lifted the D2WO4 format.

Anyway, thanks to Alison for being a big inspiration, and to The Nib for giving me a platform to talk a little bit about her awesomeness.

ALSO: I will be at Cartoon Crossroads Columbus this weekend, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1. I am not actually sure what my table assignment is? But I will definitely be there and you should find me and buy a bunch of comics. Yep.

Cheers,

Dylan

I’ll be returning to the STAPLE! Independent Media Expo for the first time in 4 years! It’s happening this weekend, September 9-10, in good ol’ Austin, Texas.

This will be the convention debut of my new enamel pins, the Caterpillar and the Catstronaut, so come snag ’em while they’re hot! (Or if you can’t make it to STAPLE, you can buy them online in my Etsy store.)

Feeping Creatures on Threadless

MEANWHILE. I have set up a Feeping Creatures Threadless shop for all your POD monster needs. Shirts, bags, phone cases, shower curtains! All kinds of fun stuff. Click on an image to see all the different designs associated with it.

I need a new phone case anyway, and am thinking I might go with the Toxoplasmoids version. I mean, why NOT cover your phone in adorable bacteria.

Finally, I got a shout-out in this Buzzfeed listicle of 28 Trans, Queer, and Nonbinary comic creators. Check it out, because there’s a TON of amazing artists in there.

Okay, gotta go get ready to head to the airport. Upon my return, it’s back to penciling chapter 8 of Valley of the Silk Sky!

Cheers,

Dylan

QAT Person number 2 queer asexual transgender comics

Lots of announcements to make! First up, I added my newest minicomic to my Gumroad store. QAT Person 2 contains comics I’ve done for The Nib and PEN America, as well as some extras. So if you’ve been wanting print versions of those, here ’tis!

I also have two illustrations in the upcoming Butch Lesbians of the ’20s, ’30’s, and ’40s Coloring Book, which is scheduled for a June release from Stacked Deck Press. You can preorder now, though!

Next week, May 26-29, I’ll be at WisCon. You will mostly be able to find me in the vendor’s room with my comics and Feeping Creatures stuff. I’ll also be on three panels:

Small Everyday Forms of Resistance in SF/F
Saturday, May 27
10:00 AM – 11:15 AM

Alt-Comix, How Do They Work?
Sunday, May 28
8:30 AM – 9:45 AM

World-Building through Profanity
Sunday, May 28
4:00 PM – 5:15 PM

So THAt oughta be a bucket of fun. (That profanity panel I am extremely excited about, I gotta say.)

Finally, I’m sorry to say I’ve decided to remove my comics from Tapastic. Their most recent update to the terms of service was unacceptable to me, so I’ve deleted all my series on there. You can, of course, still read my comics right here at studiondr.com, or you can follow Valley of the Silk Sky on tumblr.

Cheers,

Dylan
