Valley of the Silk Sky Chadsen

VoSS page 8 is here for your viewing pleasure, and features a THRILLING, ACTION-PACKED economic exchange! Where can you read it? Why, here:

Just a wee little reminder that the cultures of the Valley have no specific concept of gender, so everyone’s nonbinary by default, hence the “xe/xer” pronouns.

More VoSS news! The Beyond Anthology Kickstarter is drawing nigh! In just under two weeks you will be able to throw your dollars at this fine tome of queer science fiction and fantasy comics. More details here.

As you may recall, I have a 16-page VoSS story, exclusive to the anthology, featured in Beyond. So prepare yourselves for March 16, yeah?

Final bit of VoSS news: I finished the art for chapter two, which means a couple things: first of all, that gives me 12 weeks of material in the queue (10 pages of comics and two rounds of info posts between chapters). This ALSO means I will almost certainly have the chapter 1 & 2 mini available at ECCC.

Still working on the cover art, and I have to lay everything out and all that jazz, but the hard part is mostly done. So. VoSS MINI IMMINENT.

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky Razi

Oh, wow, Valley of the Silk Sky page 7 already, wherein we are treated to an EXCITING, ACTION-PACKED discussion of economics! You may seek these thrills here:

The Valley has very unusual geography, which makes it host to countless microclimates. The resulting epic levels of biodiversity mean there are jillions of rare species around, many of which have desirable properties (especially medical). Actually getting to them, though ….

In further VoSS news, the Kickstarter for the Beyond Anthology is going to gear up in just a couple of weeks! As a reminder, I have a 16-page standalone Valley of the Silk Sky story in there, exclusive to the book.

Queer Pin-up Playing Card deck

And oh, how awesome is THIS. A playing card deck featuring a whole slew of queer comics pin-ups by a bunch of amazing artists! Alison Bechdel, Diane DiMassa, Ed Luce, Elisha Lim, MariNaomi, and others … including ME!

I love card decks and I love playing cards, so this is extra exciting. This is a fundraiser item to help finance the Queers & Comics conference this May in NYC, so not only do you get a bunch of awesome comic art, your money goes to a great cause. You can pick up a deck or three here in the Northwest Press shop.

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky Razi and Oris

Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run page 6 is here, is now. Is dialogue! You want read:

Juuuust in case it’s not obvious from context, that gesture Razi is making in panel 3 is the Pocali equivalent of a middle finger.

Re: clothing: if you’re wearing bright colors you’re probably a merchant. If you’re wearing khaki, you’re probably a runner.

Over on the Valley of the Silk Sky website, I’ll be posting more world-building notes about clothing styles and rude gestures at the end of the chapter. None of that will be required reading for the story, but it’s there for folks who enjoy those sorts of details.

As far as progress on the rest of the story goes, all of the art for chapter 1 is completely finished, and I expect I’ll wrap up the pencils on chapter 2 today. This means the likelihood of having a minicomic of chapters 1 and 2 available at ECCC at the end of March is lookin’ good.

Cheers,

Dylan

Page 5 of Valley of the Silk Sky is now up! “Welcome to Duvane: You Probably Won’t Get Eaten Here!” Here’s where you can see it:

If you’re here because of the anti-Valentine’s Day cards, I dunno, perhaps you might be interested in my current comics project? Valley of the Silk Sky is a long-form science fiction webcomic where the main cast are basically all queer, some are trans, some are asexual, and some are intersex. All are nonbinary/genderqueer cuz that’s just how the world works. They have adventures and do stuff and don’t really agonize about the LGBTQIAness of it.

VoSS has its own website so I can nerd out about world-building stuff without cluttering up Studio NDR any worse than it already is. But I also post just the comics pages here sans extra nerdity, and also on Tapastic.

ANYWAY. Please come back next week when there’ll be some, like, dialogue and stuff.

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky the Long Run Razi

Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run page 4 is actually a PSA suggesting that perhaps stopping to smell the flowers is not such a great idea after all.

Point your eyeballs thisaway:

I am in the midst of coloring page 10, which I will probably finish today. Will I be able to knock out the rest of the chapter by next week? Maybe! We shall see.

In a perfect world I’d be able to complete chapter 2 in time to do a little promo book of the first two chapters for ECCC. This is not totally outside the realm of possibility, but it’s probably not worth rushing the art for. The question is, if I don’t get chapter 2 finished, is it worth it to print up a book that’s just chapter 1, or is it better to hold off and just do the 2-chapters book. I’m leaning towards the latter.

In other news, Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts should be going to press very shortly, so that I should definitely have for ECCC. Woo!

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky Razi

Check back next week to find out whether or not xe* got eaten already.

Where can you see this frabjuous page?

* Quick note about pronouns: I expand on this more in the VoSS FAQ, but the TL;DR version is that cultures of the Pocalo Valley don’t have a concept of gender per se, so they don’t have gendered pronouns.

Whatever your physical body may be (and they know there are more than two possible configurations), that carries no expectations regarding your social behavior or your abilities.

Valley of the Silk Sky

With page 2 of Valley of the Silk Sky, our aerial survey of the valley continues. The settlement on the lower right is called Duvane, and there’s a reason it’s not on the ground. Not that the sky is a whole lot safer, it would seem.

So many choices of where to see the page!

Progress report on the rest of the story: I’ve been nailing down the script for the rest of the book. Chapters 1-3 were already scripted and thumbnailed, and while I knew what happened for the rest of it, now it’s a matter of getting all the bits in order and formally set out. For instance, I now know there will be seven chapters total plus an epilogue. I don’t have a final page count yet, but I’m guessing it’ll come in at around 120 pages, give or take.

Chapter 1 pencils are finished, and I’m most of the way through the inks for page 10. Once the inking is wrapped up, it’ll be back to coloring.

I’m hoping to have a little minicomic of chapter 1 available for sale at ECCC. At this rate I should have all the pages done in time to get something printed up. This is mostly for promo, probably not going to print each chapter individually. Though I do very much hope to have a print book of the whole story once it’s complete.

So! That’s the status of things. Tune in next week for an actual PROTAGONIST.

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Todd hairy chest

Lots of stuff to run through today! This is the last Politically InQueerect post for awhile, but it does feature Todd’s hairy chest, so you can’t say I never gave ya nothin’.

I will obviously babble more about PiQue once the Old Ghosts book is out, but for the foreseeable future my comic energies are bent (har har) towards …

Valley of the Silk Sky p1 bird

Valley of the Silk Sky, which officially debuts today! You have several choices for where to read this series:

  • On the Valley of the Silk Sky website, which is convenient if you’re a Tumblr user. This is also where you’ll go for further VoSS fun like character info, worldbuilding details, publication info, and so forth.
  • I’m also running it on Tapastic for the convenience of people who were already following PiQue over there.
  • And yes, I’m publishing it here on Studio NDR as well.

So! Pick yer favorite, and follow along!

Taxonomically Unbound Devil Fish

The title to this post is hilariously meaningless if you don’t know my wacky shorthand (wackronyms?). Taxo Unbo = Taxonomically Unbound, VoSS = Valley of the Silk Sky.

Anyway, point being, I’ve posted a new Taxonomically Unbound today, and you can read it here on Studio NDR, or here on Tapastic.

Meanwhile, Valley of the Silk Sky is set to start next week! It debuts on Wednesday, January 14 (or on Monday, January 12 for my $1+ Patrons). I made this tiny banner for it, just in case you’re the sort of person who runs a queer webcomic list and wants to add a link:

Valley of the Silk Sky 200x40 banner

As far as overall progress goes, I’m midway through the pencils on page 12, with five pages completely finished, so I’ve got a decent buffer going in. We’ll see if that buffer survives convention season, of course, but I’m gonna try to keep it going uninterrupted.

See you next week with a BRAND NEW COMIC.

Cheers,

Dylan

The second half of Politically InQueerect’s storyline “Typical” is now up on Tapastic!

Lookit that old CRT monitor. And the excitement over receiving email rather than a sigh of relief over an empty inbox. How times have changed …

… speaking of changing times, that’s about it for PiQue. I do believe I’ve gone through all the old comics at this point. Next week I expect I’ll do a post of random art and sketches and whatnot, stuff you might not have seen. And then the mantle of “comic I am focusing on” will pass to Valley of the Silk Sky, which debuts next week on Wednesday, January 14. Or on Monday, January 12 for my $1+ Patrons.

Interestingly, Politically InQueerect is 15 years old this month. This first comic I ever did for that series was published on my website back in January 2000. 100 pages of comics in 15 years is not a great showing, truth be told. But VoSS already has 27 pages done or penciled before its release, so I think this one will stick a bit better. :)

Sci-fi/fantasy has always really been where my heart is, and over the years it’s gotten harder and harder for me to feel motivated to write about the real world. Like, why do I want to spend my time living vicariously in a workaday office world when I don’t even want to live that in real life? Ya know?

So I’m off to have queer adventures in made-up worlds. Hopefully you’ll stick around for that, but if not, thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Dylan
